According to U.S. Department of Education estimates, as many as 2 million children are home-schooled – and this number is increasing rapidly. American Values believes the most important thing we can do to improve education in America is to take power away from the government and give it back to parents. Home school students are on the cutting edge of education issues, and the home-schooling movement gains legitimacy every day because its students are winning spelling and geography bees and are often testing two, three, even four grades ahead of other students at the same age. We need to give parents the right to decide how and where their children are taught and keep federal regulations from infringing upon the rights of home-schooling families.

We support tuition tax credits and vouchers without government restriction that can be used to pay home-schooling expenses. Parents are children's foremost authority and first and best teachers. They, not Washington bureaucrats, should decide how and where their children are to be educated. Washington-based one-size-fits-all federal education programs can't substitute for the love, care and wisdom of parents.
