Bauer, Hagee Urge Israel to Keep Control of Jerusalem

04/09/2008

Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 4/9/2008 8:00:00 AM

Pastor John Hagee and his pro-Israel organization have announced they will give $6 million to Israeli causes, while insisting that the Jewish state must remain in control of all of Jerusalem.

Pastor Hagee, founder and national chairman of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), recently took hundreds of backers on a solidarity trip to the Holy Land and joined keynote speaker and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a rally in support of Jerusalem remaining united and under Jewish control.

Gary Bauer, a founding member of CUFI and a member of its executive board, says swapping land for peace has never worked. "At some point the United States should stop pressuring Israel to make these moves. And the Israeli government ought to stiffen its resolve and remind itself that it's facing enemies that won't be satisfied until it has all the land of Israel," Bauer contends.

He also believes the country is ready for new leadership. "Public opinion in Israel has swung heavily toward no more concessions, and it's understandable why. And I think Benjamin Netanyahu is sort of personifying that resistance among the Israeli people to giving up any more land, and [he is] seeing it correctly ... as a threat to their national security," Bauer says.

Bauer says he agrees with Hagee's statement to the crowd that "turning part or all of Jerusalem over to the Palestinians would be tantamount to turning it over to the Taliban."

"I'm particularly proud today, given what Pastor Hagee has said on this trip to Israel," says Bauer. "The one lesson that's absolutely clear in recent years is that every time Israel gives away land and does so in the vain hope for peace, the exact opposite has happened. It happened when they left Gaza. It happened when they left Southern Lebanon. And it certainly will happen if they give away the West bank and half of Jerusalem," he points out.
