| In the 1990s, the People's Republic of China emerged as one of the world's gravest threats to American values. China brutalizes its own people with forced abortion and sterilization campaigns, steals American nuclear secrets, threatens America, Taiwan and its own Asian neighbors with ballistic missiles and represses free expression and religious liberty. It is important that we stand unambiguously committed to a peaceful, democratic Taiwan. Unfortunately, many of our elected officials support policies that reward China for its brutality, thus giving the worlds’ most populous country an incentive to continue these practices. China needs to improve its human rights record, as well as cease threatening Taiwan, before the U.S. should give it access to our markets. America’s national security and values must trump long-term economic interests. Contrary to the predictions of many, access to our markets has not convinced Beijing to act in a more responsible manner. Most Americans don’t realize that so many of the products we buy go directly to fund the Chinese Communist government and its 3-million man army (by far the largest in the world). American Values believes the U.S. cannot acquiesce to China’s brutal regime and that we – as the leaders of the free world – must be an example to unliberated peoples that the principles of liberty and justice must trump economic gain. |
