WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Presidential candidate Gary L. Bauer on Tuesday called the choice of Judge John G. Roberts to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor "a refreshing nominee who possesses an outstanding record of judicial accomplishment as well as a commitment to judicial restraint long missing from so many activist courts." Mr. Bauer paused during his schedule, traveling overseas, to make his comments.
The president of American Values continued: "As chairman of Citizens to Confirm Clarence Thomas, I witnessed first hand the savaging of a superior nominee, and I hope that history will not repeat itself. But every day my office receives calls and letters of support for this president from the many Americans who want to help him make his mark on history. More than the war on terror in which we are all engaged, the future of America rests on the choices made to fill the vacant seats on our courts. I know that I will work tirelessly to help this president put men and women on the bench who understand that the vision of the Founding Fathers recorded in our U.S. Constitution was sound and good. A great nation was built on the foundation of such wisdom, and I am looking forward to seeing Judge Roberts take the bench in support of it."
