BAUER CALLS OFFENSIVE VENDOR PRODUCT “WRONG AND HURTFUL”; URGES RACIAL RECONCILLIATION
09/13/2008
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American Values President Gary Bauer on Sunday made the following statement about appropriate decision to pull “Obama Waffles” from the Values Voter Summit over the weekend:“It was wrong and unnecessarily hurtful that a vendor at the Values Voter Summit attempted to sell a product that portrayed Barak Obama in a way that some could find offensive, as I did. I applaud FRC Action’s fast response in shutting down the booth once they learned about the product. They were told that the booth would have materials that discussed Obama’s waffling on public policy, but not that it would include caricatures of the candidate. Although my organization was not a part of the vetting or oversight of the exhibits at the Values Voter Summit, I and other sponsors of the event appreciate FRC action’s quick response to an inappropriate exhibit. The Values Voter summit has become an important place for discussion and debate among the media, political and policy experts and grassroots leaders. A civil discourse is vital to sustain and strengthen our democracy. Racial reconciliation has been one of our most important reoccurring themes and is central to all efforts to work together on behalf of the American family. As so often happens in political America, the exemplary work of leaders like Star Parker, Ken Blackwell, Bishop Harry Jackson and other conference speakers has been ignored in favor of the bad decision by one exhibitor.”
